Mauritian Sega

Traditional Mauritian sega - sega tipik - is nowadays played mainly with the ravann, triyang, maravann. The clave is often played by hitting on an empty glass bottle.

The ravann is a frame drum similar to a daf or tar.


Mauritian sega uses an african clave and variation :


The triyang adds and contrasting rhythm to the clave and helps getting the polyrhythm feel.


In a typical sega tipik session, their will be about 4 musicians playing ravann, each with different ravann sizes providing low and high tones.
